Feline Friday – #69 – manicure, pedicure, pawicure… or a nap?

Frankie

I bought a corrugated cardboard scratcher pad for the felines last week. As soon as I put it down on the floor there was a flurry of fur scrambling for initiation rights. Frankie, being the Bully, claimed it as his before I could blink.

FreddieFreddie theย Gentle Giant politely waited for the all-clear from Frankie before hopping aboard for his turn.

But Frankie would have none of it and immediately scooted over to once again take possession of it for himself.

Now they seem to have settled into an amicable sharing arrangement. While they do use it to give their claws a manicure, or is it a pedicure… or maybe a pawicure, one or the other is often found napping on it. No worries, next week I’ll buy a second scratcher so no sharing necessary!

At top left you can see a flattened out packing box that Frankie appropriated to make his own scratcher.

Why didn’t I buy the corrugated cardboard before, you might well ask. I did have several around the house but about a year ago when Pharoah got sick and started to lose it, he preferred the scratch boxes instead of the litter boxes. I’ll say no more! Now that Pharoah has passed it is safe to introduce the scratchers again…. okay, you had to ask!

  1. Always a good thing when they come to an amicable arrangement. Looks like happy scratching days, Roslyn. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Frankie likes the legs of tables and chairs. Freddie likes the back and arms of the sofa. I’m hoping now I can put the scratchers safely back down this activity will lessen somewhat.

  4. We have one too. Everyone does the occasional scratch but Gracie loves it best.

  5. Frankie’s is a Hemingway cat!!, Ayden too. Scratch away, save the furniture!

    • Yes indeed, Laurie. From what I understand there are different kinds of polydactyl cats. Some have an extra large dewclaw that looks like a thumb… which is Frankie’s condition… others just have an extra toe on the same paw. Which one is Ayden?

  6. Wouldn’t have thought a scratcher ideal for napping, but then again…cats. ๐Ÿ˜„ Is it me or does Freddie look sad in that second photo?

  7. My mother had a cat. I adore them but am allergic to them so have to appreciate other people’s cats in photos (and youtube videos, of course!) instead! I’d not heard of these scratching pads. What a good idea, my mum’s cat used to just use the furniture…
I’m so sorry you lost Pharoah. I saw your post about him, he was a lovely cat by all accounts.

    • Sorry to hear you are allergic. I have a friend who couldn’t stay for more than 15 minutes in my house… but then I removed the carpets and laid wood floors… she was no longer allergic to my cats! Despite the scratch pads, which they do use, they still like to scratch on the furniture.
