Feline Friday – #25 – keeping cool

pharoahLately we had some hot, humid days. We all had our various, creative ways to keep cool.

Pharoah parked himself by the roof deck door so he could take advantage of any breeze that might drift by.

Freddie camped out on top of the toilet tank by the open bathroom window.

Frankie settled in between my feet on the deck in the cool evening air.

As the summers get hotter and more muggy on the west side of LA, I keep procrastinating about calling someone to fix the A/C, but I need to do it for all of us.

I am an explorer and creative person. I've had many jobs, careers and interests... everything in life and the universe fascinates me. Born in Brighton, England, I've lived my entire adult life in Los Angeles, California. A few years ago I rediscovered photography which is a great excuse to get outside and look. I'm also in the process of re-writing some of my unpublished short stories and possibly a novel. .

  1. Ha ha! Freddie’s got the right idea…hilarious!

  2. Glad to hear it gets cooler in the evening. Freddie is smart 🙂

  3. Freddie is obviously a smart cookie. Cool porcelain against his belly, and the possibility of a bit of breeze. Smart kitty. Can’t imagine how hard it must be to try to make it through the summer months without A/C. You’re made of tougher stuff than me, by a long shot. I jokingly told my sister just the other day if my A/C went out I’d have to move into my car, just so I would still have A/C. I was only half-joking. We sometimes have power outages during peak energy usage hours, and I was whining about the A/C being off for a couple of hours. All summer long? You’re a tough cookie. A melting warm and gooey cookie, but a tough cookie. Hope you get the opportunity to make those repairs, so you (and yours) can be more comfortable.

My big dog (the Akita) loves to lay on the ceramic tile floor in the hall bathroom. I always worry that it’s too hard on his achy joints, but figure I can’t argue that it’s probably the coolest place in the house. Dark, too, since no one hardly ever uses that bathroom. It’s become his favorite napping cave. He has beds sprinkled throughout the house, but invariably, I find him in the cave. Wish there was a way to make ceramic tile squishy and soft, but still cool. I’m actually thinking about try to find one of those gel pads to put on his biggest bed, (which happens to be very squishy and soft). Hoping maybe the gel will help keep him cool. Still mulling it over.

Always enjoy your kitty photos. Pharoah and Frankie are both adorable, but I can’t help it. Freddie makes me smile. 🙂

    • Thanks for your thoughts. No I am not made of tough stuff which is why I choose to live in Culver City. Our temps can be 10 degrees cooler than downtown Los Angeles just 10 miles away. And LA is known for its low humidity (or used to be) anyway. I am 5 miles from the ocean and beside Ballona Creek that runs to Playa del Rey (beach of the king). So we get cooling breezes. However, with the climate change we are getting hotter summers and even rain (although still in a drought) that can make things very uncomfortable. I feel like I’m living in Florida (where I have lived) and I do not enjoy that climate. My a/c & heat stopped working about 10 years ago but I didn’t get it fixed because I really didn’t need it. But now with the hotter summers and colder winters the time has come to get it fixed. I still do pretty well with fans and space heaters. My place is very open like a barn so it takes a lot to cool the place down or heat it up with the central air & heat. But if I ever wanted to sell or rent it out I would have to get it fixed anyway, so I should go ahead and do it. Freddie says thank you for the compliment, but I’m not telling the others. He has worked hard since day one to be the clown and I guess he has succeeded! They all make me laugh in their own ways! Cats are natural born comedians. All my cats like to lie on the hardwood floors or tile so I don’t think they necessarily need something squishy. Your dog might be quite happy on the hard surfaces. But they do like to lie on towels and pillows too… perhaps a little of both. But as long as you have the a/c I’m sure he is fine! Cheers, r

  4. Smart kittys; so nice to see them!

  5. Ros and the cool cats. You should fix the AC, my friend.
