Feline Friday – 3 – Freddie the gentle giant

freddie the cat

Freddie always has a surprised look on his face… or maybe it’s a guilty look…. okay, you found me out… he has plenty to be guilty about!

Three weeks in a row now I have managed to post a Feline Friday. So I will stop remarking on it and get on with the post.

As you can see from this and previous cat photos I have posted, I have a lot to learn about taking cat portraits. Getting a cat to sit still and/or using a fast enough shutter speed to capture the moment always eludes me. Practice makes perfect so I will keep trying.

With his “cross-eyes” I think he has a little Siamese in him.

I won’t repeat the story of how Freddie came to adopt me. You can read the story here.

Just to say that when I walked into the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter, little did I know that there was a feline lurking there who was determined to go home with the next human who interviewed him. Lucky me!

I say that both facetiously and seriously. We have shared a home since August 20, 2013 and my life hasn’t been the same since.

Freddie checking out a cactus. I wish I could say this was the last time he attempted this but he loves to brush up against the spines on a regular basis.

And as if Freddie wasn’t mischievous and rambunctious enough, when Frankie adopted me a few months later, my life was over.

I made this bed out of a plastic storage crate and several layers of old blankets and sheets. Freddie immediately appropriated it for himself.

I read stories about “cat ladies” living with ten or even fifty cats! Three is more than enough for me and some days I wonder what I was thinking!

His favorite place to hang out is in the top floor of the cat condo by the window. When I got it home I realized it was too small for Freddie, especially as half the bottom is cut out. But no worries, he crams himself in there and won’t let anybody else share. His feet and tail sometimes hang down through the cutout.

Freddie wasn’t a small cat from the beginning. But around one year old, one morning I woke up and it seemed like he had doubled in size overnight!

Freddie loves to hang over the front balcony wall to watch everything going on in the street. Note all the fencing I have had to install as on several occasions he managed to jump into the trees and down into the street.

At 18 months he is my Gentle Giant weighing in at 15 lbs. I can only hope he has stopped growing. He is a real sweet heart, but the clumsiest cat in the universe. When he jumps on the bed at 2:00am it feels like an earthquake.

Now you have met all three of my boys, what to write about next week?

  1. Well, you’ve certainly got your hands full, RMW! The last photo of Freddie is priceless! I’d say you’ve got the cat portrait taking down! 🙂

  2. Your photos are good. I have tons of butts and tails for my efforts. Love your last one though. Now that is a butt!

  3. 15 lbs already… these are beautiful photos of your cat!

  4. Pets photography could be tough..dogs perhaps easier than cats, well, at least mine, sometimes he is posing in front of my camera 😀 Love the pictures of Freddie. He is adorable!

  5. You have the cat photograpy down very well already, Ros. These photos are fantastic. Your cats are natural born actors! Tasting cactus! Peeking out of beds. Perching on scratching posts. Trying to jailbreak through wire fencing! Quite the crew. Happy times at your place. Thanks for the Friday sharing. 🙂

  6. Freddie is a stinker. We have a stinker too and have had to do the same thing to our fencing! Sigh!!! Curious creatures aren’t they?

    • Yup, next thing I’m installing fencing around the upstairs deck as now he can jump on the roof and I hear him trotting around up there during the night! And it isn’t reindeer!

  7. I love the framing of the last image. All of them are very nice!

  8. Oh, they are adorable! I think these pictures are great, I only get fairly good ones when the cat is asleep. Hugs and nose kisses for them from Mumsy, Chancy and Pooh
